There’s a dark side to the internet, and you probably don’t even know it exists. Anonymous online browsing and cryptocurrency may seem harmless on their own, but they are fuelling illicit dark web marketplaces where drugs, guns and counterfeit documents are traded, far from authorities’ reach. And the biggest marketplace of them all was AlphaBay, operated out of Bangkok, with transactions reaching almost US$1 million every single day.
